DJI Phantom 4 review: Automatic flying for the people

It's all in the experience.

While I could tell you all about the specs and the new features and the performance -- and I will get to those --

it's the overall experience of using DJI's Phantom 4 that puts it above the rest.

Polished is the word that comes to mind. Other drones I've flown aren't necessarily more difficult to get started with and pilot, but DJI makes doing these things painless and uncomplicated. (Though, if you've never flown one before, you'll want to at least read the quick-start guide or, god forbid, the full user manual). This, along with the Phantom 4's new Obstacle Sensing System (OSS) and streamlined design, are why it's quickly been tagged as being great for beginners. At least, beginners with deep pockets: The Phantom 4 sells for $1,399 in the US, AU$2,399 in Australia and £1,229 in the UK.

The Phantom 4 might truly be the drone anyone can fly and it is certainly worth the money if you've got it. Still, for however polished the experience is, it might be too much of a good thing for absolute beginners.

Joshua Goldman/CNET

Crashproof? Yeah, not so much

If you've read anything about the Phantom 4, you know it's the first consumer model you can buy with an advanced obstacle-avoidance system that DJI calls OSS. The stout quadcopter has a set of optical sensors in front -- eyes that will help it navigate around or over obstacles within 0.7 to 15 meters (2.3 to 49 feet) of it or it will simply stop and hover until you pilot it away. (It also enables a couple new flight modes, which I'll get to in a bit.)

For the most part it works really well and it will likely prevent many accidental collisions. Yes, you can test it by flying it directly at things like fences or buildings or cars or yourself, and it will stop on its own. But what I worry about most when flying are trees.

Clip a tree at 100 feet in the air and it can either start an uncontrollable fall to the ground or, perhaps worse, get stuck like some cruel Christmas tree ornament you can see but never touch. Having the ability to avoid trees is especially important when using the return-to-home feature that summons the drone back to you.

Joshua Goldman/CNET

The Phantom 4 fared better than I expected. I tested just as the Northeast was headed into spring, so I was flying around a lot of trees that were bare from winter. It had no trouble stopping itself before flying into a line of pine trees on an autonomous flight back to me. When navigating around sparse branches stripped clean of leaves, it didn't immediately recognize them as an obstacle. Had the branches been thick with leaves, it might have stopped in its tracks as it had when I flew near trees in full bloom. Or, maybe it was operator error.

You see, I was coming at the tree from an angle that could've been outside of the OSS's visual range. It senses what's in front of the Phantom, not above, to the sides or behind it. So while the system can stop a head-on collision, you'll have no problems crashing it from other directions. My point is, the OSS is great to have, but for new pilots it could create a false sense of security.

Sport mode is fun, but dangerous for newbies

All it takes is a flip of a switch on the controller and you'll be able to fly at speeds up to 45 mph (72 kph) using the Phantom 4's Sport mode. It's not just faster going forward and back, but it can ascend at 6 meters (20 feet) per second and descend at 4 meters (13 feet) per second. This is a really nice addition because it lets you get to a location that much faster to get the shot you want. It gives you a bit of a racing drone experience, too, and with an HDMI module for the controller you can connect FPV (first-person view) goggles to immerse yourself in the experience.

Joshua Goldman/CNET

A little movement on the stick literally goes a long way, though. And the OSS doesn't work in Sport mode so if you're flying head-on into something, don't expect these sensors to save you. Plus, when it is travelling at top speed, it takes much more time for it to stop. The DJI Go app warns you of this the first time you enter the mode, but never again. Regardless, it's not a mode I would suggest for first-time pilots.

Alright, you probably get the idea by now: the Obstacle Sensing System can potentially keep you out of trouble, but it's no excuse to fly recklessly or not learn how to properly pilot the drone. Now, on to the good stuff.

Better video through autonomy

So yes, the Phantom 4 can use its optical sensors to avoid crashing into things when you're piloting. But it can also use them to automatically do your bidding in the air.

DJI's Go mobile app for iOS and Android devices is used not only for getting a view from the drone's camera, but adjusting settings and seeing all your important flight data and battery status. Connect your device to the controller via a USB cable, open the app and voila, it's all at your fingertips.

The app is also how you set the Phantom 4 up to fly autonomously using DJI's Intelligent Flight modes. These include the ability to have the drone follow you using a GPS signal from the controller and perform movements like orbiting around you or another point of interest and arranging a set of waypoints on a map for it to follow.

You can do all of those things with the Phantom 3 models, but new for the Phantom 4 is ActiveTrack, which uses the OSS to follow a subject. You just draw a box on screen around what you want to track, tap the Go button that appears and the drone starts following, keeping the camera centered on whoever or whatever you selected.

I tested it out on my daughter as she rode her bike and as long as she didn't move too fast, the drone was able to keep up. The subject has to be close or large to work effectively. When she did travel out of its range, the drone started tracking her when she got near again. Though it's not perfect, it worked better than GPS for keeping her in the center of the shot.

Screenshot by Josh Goldman/CNET

Another new mode called TapFly pretty much does what the name implies: Tap on a point on screen and the Phantom 4 will fly there, avoiding obstacles along the way. Tap another point and it will transition and pilot its way there. An on-screen horizon line gives you control over changing the drone's altitude by tapping above or below it. And you can still use your sticks to steer the drone for your shot, too.

Basically, it allows you to set up a single-point flight path on the fly, assuming that point is in front of the drone. Combine this with the drone's automatic takeoff with a swipe and a tap in the app and, well, yes, anyone could put the Phantom 4 in the air and "fly" it.

If at any point you want to stop and think about your next move, a Pause button has been added on the controller that will set the drone to stop and hover in place. (The Pause button works regardless of the mode you're in, too.)

A new design for a new era of flight

Making most of these new features possible required a redesign. DJI streamlined the body and gimbal design, putting more of it inside the body. It has more powerful motors and propellers that lock on with a simple push and twist instead of the endless spinning required to get the old props on and off.

Joshua Goldman/CNET

Due in part to these design changes and a new battery, DJI was able to squeeze more flight time out of the Phantom 4 at up to 28 minutes. I was unable to reach that mark, but I was regularly flying in a fair amount of wind. I averaged between 22 to 25 minutes if I ignored the constant low battery warnings. The default settings start the controller beeping starting at 30 percent battery and then lands you automatically at 10 percent. These can be shut off, but, you know, they're there for a reason. Also, extra batteries are expensive at $169 (AU$289, £129).

The landing gear is slightly shorter and spread wider than previous models making touching down less likely to cause it to tip. However, the legs are still fixed to the body, so while the body overall is more compact, you're still not slipping this easily into an average backpack.

The camera is for the most part unchanged from the Phantom 3 Professional's excellent shooter. But DJI added a slow-motion option capturing 1080p at 120fps and it has improved the lens so there's less chromatic aberration and better corner sharpness. It, too, is not removable, which means it can't simply be upgraded or replaced.

DJI's Phantom 4 is in fact a pretty amazing piece of technology and -- for the moment -- has supplanted the Phantom 3 Professional as the consumer camera drone to get if you've got the money. That said, the out-of-the-box flight experience isn't all that different from the Phantom 3 -- any of them. To be sure, the Phantom 4 does more, but if you are a beginner, there are less expensive options for learning to fly and capturing nice video and photos while you do it.

Best time to trade in your old Galaxy S phones? Right now

If you've been thinking about trading in an older Samsung Galaxy S device, now is the time to lock in your price.

ask-maggie.png

According to the trade-in site Nextworth, older Samsung Galaxy smartphones are at their peak. But prices are likely to start dropping in the coming weeks. In this edition of Ask Maggie, I talk to a NextWorth executive who explains why the company increased the value it has been paying consumers who trade in older Galaxy S series devices. I also help another reader figure out the best place for trading in her old devices.

Older Galaxy S smartphones increase in value

Dear Maggie,

I'm considering upgrading to the Samsung Galaxy S5. I've been using a Galaxy S3 for the past couple of years. I've heard that it's a good idea to sell old devices before the new one goes on sale. But I wasn't quite ready to commit to the Galaxy S5. Is it too late to sell my Galaxy S3? Will I still get a good price?

Thanks,

Galaxy Lover

Dear Galaxy Lover,

I've got some good news for you. It's not too late to sell your old Galaxy S3 and in fact, you'll probably get top dollar for it if you lock in your price as soon as you can.

Jeff Trachsel, chief marketing officer for Nextworth, said that in the week or so before the launch of the new Samsung S5 , his trade-in Web site actually raised the prices they were paying for older Samsung Galaxy S devices by about 15 percent. He said strong demand for these older models and low inventory of trade-ins on these devices is what has driven the increase in value.

But he warned that the high prices won't last long.

"We're already starting to see demand soften," he said. "And since the release of the Galaxy S5 on April 11, we've seen a big uptick in people coming to the Nextworth site to get quotes on older Galaxy S phones."

What this means for you and the other Galaxy S2, S3, and S4 owners is that you should lock in your quotes as soon as you can before the values start dropping.

So what's going on?

Conventional wisdom suggests that if you're trading in old gadgets it's better to sell sooner rather than later. Just like cars, old gadgets start depreciating almost the moment you take them for a spin around the block. And in general, Trachsel says that still holds true.

"Over time the value of all devices goes down. That is just a function of depreciation," he said. "So holding on to an older device and hoping for an uptick in the price is generally not a good strategy."

s4-ebay-sales.jpg
Nextworth

He added that what he has seen recently with the older Galaxy S phones is not a common occurrence when it comes to gadget trade-ins.

"I've been at Nextworth for three years," he said. "And I can tell you that it's very rare that prices ever increase."

Indeed, when Nextworth analyzed pricing information over the past couple of years, the company saw some consistent trends. In the four to five months leading up to and following the launch of the Galaxy S3 and the Galaxy S4, prices on the older Galaxy S phones declined about 25 percent to 30 percent.

In general, the decline is steepest when a new generation of device is first announced and right after it goes on sale. The same pattern holds true for the Apple iPhone, which is also released on a yearly basis like the Galaxy S series.

Trachsel said the reason why Nextworth decided to raise the price it pays on Galaxy S trade-ins is because the company was seeing higher demand for these devices. At the same time, the inventory was relatively low. He explained that demand isn't just coming from overseas. There has also been strong demand domestically.

"We couldn't keep them in stock," he said. "I think the lower price point of older Galaxy phones is really attractive. People know the Samsung Galaxy brand, but they may not be able to afford a newer model. So they get an older version, much like we've seen people do with the iPhone."

Indeed, Samsung has built a successful brand in the Galaxy S series. Trachsel said Google Android smartphones from other manufacturers do not have the same resale and trade-in value that Samsung Galaxy products get. Samsung has essentially copied Apple's playbook from the yearly product release cycle to the consistent release and branding across carriers. And it's worked. This strategy coupled with an aggressive and expensive marketing campaign has made the Galaxy brand a household name.

All this awareness is good news for Galaxy users who are looking to resell their older phones.

The Bottom Line:

Nextworth's Trachsel says now is the time to sell your old Galaxy S devices. Prices are likely at their peak, and they'll soon start declining in the coming weeks as the market gets flooded with older devices from people trading them in for the new Galaxy S5. There are also some good promotions out there that sweeten the deal further. For instance, Nextworth is offering an extra 10 percent on top of the trade in value. So my advice to you is that if you really want the Galaxy S5, lock in your price today on your old Galaxy S3.

Good luck!

Trade-in sites vs. retailers?

Dear Maggie,

I've been seeing deals in stores like Target and Best Buy to trade in old smartphones. Is this the way to go these days when trading in devices? Or is it better to use one of those trade-in Websites?

Thanks,

Cheryl

Dear Cheryl,

There are pros and cons to trading a device in online as well as trading it in at a retail store.

Pros of in-store trade-ins

  • Convenience: If you're a regular shopper at Target or there's a Best Buy in your neighborhood, simply taking your device into the store is probably the easiest and most convenient way to trade it in.
  • Better offer: Retailers tend to offer higher values for some phones, depending on the promotions they're running. For instance, Target is running a promotion right now that guarantees customers get at least $100 on their old devices to put toward the cost of a new Samsung Galaxy S5. The discount coupons must be used the same day to buy the new Galaxy S5, and it can only be used for devices on a two-year contract.

Cons of in-store trade-ins

  • Payment comes in store credit: Often the payment method for trade-in programs at retailers is store-credit. This is why retailers are often able to offer higher values for certain devices. And the trade-in value may come with strings attached, such as the Target promotion I just mentioned, which requires you use a coupon from your trade-in to buy a new device with a two-year contract.

Pros of online trade-in sites

  • Cold hard cash: Online sites like Gazelle and Nextworth offer customers cash. And as they say, "Cash is king."
  • Easy to comparison shop: If you're planning to trade-in your old device online, it's easy to get quotes from multiple Web sites and see which one offers you the best deal. You should always make sure, the trade-in site you're dealing with is reputable. There are lots of sites out there that have gotten poor customers reviews and have been cited by the Better Business Bureau.

Cons of online trade-in sites:

  • Bait and switch: Sometimes when device owners send in their devices, the price they were quoted online is not the actual price that they will fetch for their device. Even the most reputable firms reserve the right to alter the price they pay for devices if they appear more damaged than what was reported online as part of the price quote process.
  • Can be less convenient: Sending in a device by mail takes a little bit more effort than going to a store and trading it in. You need to contact the company and wait for an envelope or box to arrive that you can use to send your device to the trade-in company. And then you have to wait for them to receive the package and assess the phone. After all that, they will finally cut you a check.
  • Lower value: Because online companies offer cash for the device that's traded-in, you may get a lower offer than what's offered in a store. Online trade-in sites don't have the luxury of selling you a another device or some other in-store products. That said, as I mentioned above. You will be getting cash for your old device. And some people may view this as a primary benefit.

The Bottom Line:

At the end of the day, whether you trade-in your old device at a retailer or online depends on the type of consumer you are. If you shop at Target a lot or you're planning to turn around and upgrade to a newer device, an in-store trade-in program may be the way to go. In that instance, store credit is as good as cash. But if you'd rather pocket the cash you earn from the sale of your old devices, then go with an online trade-in site.

I hope this advice was helpful. And good luck!

Avoid Student Loan Relief Scams By Spotting These Red Flags

Avoid Student Loan Relief Scams by Spotting These Red Flags

Avoid Student Loan Relief Scams by Spotting These Red Flags

President Joe Biden and the US Department of Education are slated to begin implementing a long-awaited student loan forgiveness program but, ahead of the plan's roll-out, many borrowers may be targeted by malicious actors with an agenda. Biden's relief program would extend the ongoing student loan payment freeze until Dec. 31, canceling up to $20,000 in federal student loan debts for Pell Grant recipients. Unfortunately, wherever there is a government relief program, there are almost always scammers seeking to exploit it.

Earlier this month, the Federal Trade Commission began issuing more than $822,000 worth of checks to borrowers who lost money in a debt-relief scam from a group called Student Advocates. The FTC advised the nearly 15,000 check recipients to reach out to the FTC for verification if needed.

"Consumers who receive checks should cash them within 90 days, as indicated on the check. Recipients who have questions about their refund should call the refund administrator, JND Legal Administration, at 877-540-0989. The commission never requires people to pay money or provide account information to get a refund," the FTC said in a release.

To avoid falling prey to a new wave of scams likely to emerge in the wake of Biden's announcement, there are four red flags that the FTC says you should watch out for.

Read more: Scammers Are Using Google Ads to Target Students Seeking Loan Relief

  1. Beware of fast loan forgiveness promises. They're a common tactic of scammers who target people most in need of debt relief, and most likely to want a fast outcome.
  2. Is the person contacting you presenting themselves as a government representative? Scammers can fake a government seal and sometimes even a government email address. It's unlikely you'll be contacted directly by a government representative with promises of a fast-turnaround on debt relief, so if you have federal loans you should go directly to StudentAid.gov.
  3. Watch out for anyone who wants money up front. Neither the FTC nor any other government agency will ask for money before assisting you with student debt relief efforts.
  4. Don't give out your Federal Student Aid (FSA) ID. Because your FSA ID is considered a legal signature by the US Department of Education for use in all of its online systems, no one except you -- not even your parents, loan representative or school officials -- should have access to that number. If someone asks you for it, report them to the FTC by calling 1-877-FTC-HELP (382-4357).
A graphic illustration divided into four columns with summarized points from the FTC. The text of each, in order reads as follows. Only scammers promise fast loan forgiveness. Never pay a fee up front for help. Scammers can fake a government seal. Don't share your FSA ID with anyone. The bottom of the graphic includes text reading as follows: Report scams to ftc.gov/complaint. Looking for help? Start with studentaid.gov.
FTC

Remember, any government programs that offer student loan debt relief through the Department of Education or FTC are always offered free of charge -- and no third-party company is distributing relief funds in partnership with them at this time. If someone claiming to be with your private student loan servicer contacts you, collect their name and contact number, then hang up and call your loan servicer directly to verify the caller's authenticity.

If you've already fallen victim to a scammer, the FTC advises you to act quickly by reporting the fraud and following additional steps found in its guide. For more help avoiding scammers who target students, you can also check out the FTC's main Student Loan tip page.

FTC Accuses Data Broker of Selling Info That Could Track People to Sensitive Locations

The Federal Trade Commission is cracking down on data brokers selling information that could be used to track individuals. In a complaint filed on Monday, the FTC accuses Idaho-based company Kochava of selling information that contains sensitive geolocation data from millions of mobile devices that could be used to track people's movements to places like reproductive health clinics, places of worship, domestic violence shelters, mental health facilities, addiction recovery centers and more.

Kochava and other data brokers buy vast amounts of data and location information collected from mobile devices. They then analyze the data and repackage it for sales and marketing clients. People are typically unaware that their data is being bought and sold in this way and have no control over the practice.

The suit, filed in US District Court in Idaho, alleges that Kochava crossed a line by offering its customers data feeds where they can identify and track specific mobile users. For example, the geolocation data can be used to follow a person to their house and track when and how long they stay there, according to the FTC. The suit alleges that this information can be combined with property records and used to identify the name of the user.

The suit aims to force Kochava to stop selling the data and to delete any sensitive geolocation it has collected.

The FTC said it reviewed a publicly available data sample from Kochava and found that it contained "precise, timestamped location data collected from more than 61 million unique mobile devices in the previous week." This type of data can then be used to track people and expose sensitive information about their personal lives, which the FTC said could potentially lead to discrimination, stigma, emotional distress and, in the case of those trying to remove themselves from abusers, physical harm.

"Where consumers seek out health care, receive counseling, or celebrate their faith is private information that shouldn't be sold to the highest bidder," said Samuel Levine, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection. "The FTC is taking Kochava to court to protect people's privacy and halt the sale of their sensitive geolocation information."

Kochava didn't immediately respond to CNET's request for a comment.

'She-Hulk' Episode 2 Drops Intriguing X-Men Reference

Marvel really does seem to be gearing up to properly introduce the X-Men to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Not only did the final episode of Ms. Marvel clearly introduce mutants, but the latest episode of She-Hulk, currently streaming on Disney Plus, has added its own Easter Egg to the mix.

Spoilers for episode 2 of She-Hulk ahead.

After being fired from the district attorney's office for losing her case, She-Hulk, aka Jennifer Walters, scrawls the internet for new jobs. Zooming in on the side bar of the page, you can see two pretty significant articles.

The first is titled, "Man fights with metal claws in bar brawl." This has to be a clear reference to Wolverine. His friend and fellow mutant Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) appeared -- spoiler -- in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The second significant title is: "Why there is a giant statue of a man sticking out of the ocean." This looks like Marvel's quick and easy way of addressing the conspicuous Celestial frozen in the ocean after The Eternals prevented its Emergence. Up until this point, no one appeared bothered by the giant stone figure popping its head out of the Indian Ocean.

As for what we know so far about the X-Men, here's what Ms. Marvel finale directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah said about introducing mutants to the MCU.

"That was the best kept secret of the whole show," Arbi told TV Line. "We didn't even know about it until we suddenly had a script. So, when we had it, we asked, "What's that about? What's going to happen?' And Kevin Feige would say, 'Just shoot this, put the little music on and that's that. Should you be part of the future of Ms. Marvel, then you'll know a little bit more.' Kevin Feige has the master plan. He's the only one who knows."

Sorry if that's frustrating.

New episodes of She-Hulk stream on Thursdays.

Best MacBook Pro Alternatives for 2022

Fortunately for Apple users, Apple has made some much needed changes to MacBook Pro in the latest generations. That means no more awful keyboardannoying Touch Bar or overreliance on Thunderbolt/USB-C connections. The latest models of the 14-inch MacBook Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro come with M1 series processors, a top-notch design and displays with mini-LED backlighting. Apple also added back some of the ports that were missing in previous generations and removed the Touch Bar.

But the fact remains that there's a far bigger variety of designs, feature sets and display choices for Windows laptops and Chromebooks, and Windows remains the preferred platform for playing games locally. Cloud gaming lets Macs circumvent the gaming problem to a certain extent, but not completely; only a fraction of the universe of games is playable via the cloud.

An entry-level MacBook can stretch the limits of your budget, and those who've set aside a nice chunk of cash might want something a little more customizable. No one can deny that one appealing thing about Windows laptops is the variety. Even when trying to imitate the offerings of a MacBook (or an iPad or iPad Pro) there are all sizes of far less expensive Chromebooks, as well as 14- and 15-inch laptops that are slightly smaller and lighter than the 16-inch MacBook Pro, but not quite as small as the 13-inch MacBook Air, across the price spectrum. You can also get more variety, with alternatives like 2-in-1s. Plus, we're seeing lots of experimentation with multiscreen designs.

This list is periodically updated with new models we've tested and reviewed. It's a great place to start to get an idea of what's available. If you need advice on whether a particular type of laptop or two-in-one is right for you, jump to our laptop FAQ at the bottom of the list.

So when you want to go Windows, here are our recommendations for laptops to fill that MacBook-size void in your life.

If, like me, you're not a fan of OLED screens for photo editing -- they're not optimized for Adobe RGB and aren't great at tonal range in the shadows -- then what you need is a laptop with a good IPS display. The Dell XPS 17 9720 with the 4K screen option delivers that, and it's not as reflective as the OLED screens I've seen. Dell's PremierColor software isn't perfect, but it gives you more control over screen settings than most I've seen, and it has two Thunderbolt 3 controllers to make your external drives happy. It's heavier than the MacBook, but not much bigger, especially given its larger 17-inch screen. And while its battery life isn't terrific, its performance can certainly keep up.

And a great lower-cost alternative is the Dell Inspiron 16 Plus, which doesn't head to the front of the line primarily because of its lower build quality, and I'm assuming that if you're looking for a MacBook Pro equivalent you want the metal chassis, better screen and higher-end components. But if you also want to save as much as $1,000, it's worth considering.

If you're drawn to a MacBook Pro for its featureless-slab aesthetic, Razer's your Windows go-to. If you want one that roughly matches the 14-inch Pro for design, size and weight, the Blade 14 is your option; its little brother, the Razer Book 13 makes a great alternative to the 13-inch MacBook Pro when you want something a bit smaller and less expensive.

A smaller version than the 15-inch staple, the 14-inch Razer Blade delivers a lot of gaming power for its size without feeling small -- an important consideration for a gaming laptop, and one that Apple doesn't need to worry about -- but has decent battery life, a nice size for travel and a subtle design (for a gaming laptop) that's buttoned-up enough for sitting in a meeting with the top brass or clients.

Dell's XPS 13 is a 13.3-inch laptop that's so trimmed up that the body is basically the size of an older 11.6-inch laptop. Being part of the company's XPS line means both its chassis and components are top-notch for its class, so you're getting great battery life and performance, too. Power delivery is via USB-C and it comes with a microSD reader and headphone jack. It comes in both a standard clamshell as well as the two-in-one, but I prefer the two-in-one because you can fold it up into a tablet if you have to work in a cramped space.

What's better than the Touch Bar? An entire half-screen second display, that's what. The Duo's tilt-up second screen can act as an ancillary display, an extension of the primary display (for viewing those long web pages) or a separate control center from which you can run Asus' custom utilities or as control surfaces for select creative applications. Plus, Asus excels at squeezing every bit of performance out of its high-end laptops, and the 14-inch delivers great battery life, as well.

It comes in two models, 15-inch and the 2021 14-inch Duo 14 that we reviewed. The Duo 14 has either 11th-gen Core i5 or i7 processors, optional Nvidia MX450 discrete graphics and up to 32GB of memory.

Commonly asked questions

Which is faster, a MacBook or a Windows laptop?

That's an almost impossible question to answer.

For one thing, it's a moving target. We're starting to see Windows models featuring Intel's new 12th-gen CPUs, which has the same hybrid core architecture as Apple's M1 chips, as well as new mobile GPUs. We haven't yet had a chance to test out many of these next-gen models, but it's safe to assume that Apple's M1 processors will be facing some stiff competition.

And thus far, Apple hasn't even launched an M1 MacBook with a discrete GPU, though its integrated graphics seem to scale up to compete with current low-end Nvidia and AMD graphics up to about the RTX 3070 and Radeon RX 6800M, and definitely improves on previous Intel-based Macs though neither is really surprising. But it means that at the high end we're still in sort of a MacBook holding pattern when it comes to comparisons with heavier Windows options.

Plus, differences in operating systems complicate things. Mac OS has long been more efficient than Windows and that's only improved now that Apple owns its entire food chain. But it doesn't need to worry about compatibility with partner systems and myriad different components. Then toss in difficulties getting repeatable, comparable, representative and broad-based benchmark results for cross-platform comparisons... well, I don't feel like going down that rabbit hole right now.

Is a MacBook Pro better for content creation than a Windows laptop?

Once again, a difficult question to answer because there's no sweeping generalizations you can make. If you're basing the concern on Windows' old reputation for being inferior for graphics work, it was accurate at the time but is no longer true.

Screens on Windows laptops have come a long way, and convertibles (aka two-in-ones) mean you can paint or sketch directly on the laptop screen. With a MacBook you'd need to buy an iPad as well.

Some graphics applications are only available on one platform or the other, so figuring out which ones you need and which you can switch away from is the first thing to decide before you choose between Windows and MacOS. Also consider that MacOS no longer supports 32-bit applications, so if you've got an old favorite that hasn't been updated -- this happens most with small utilities -- but still exists on Windows, that's something to think about.

Some applications may also be better optimized for one platform than the other, or rely on a specific GPU from AMD or Nvidia for their best acceleration. Since you can't really use an Nvidia card with a Mac and none of the M1 MacBooks incorporate any discrete graphics, Windows is probably a better bet, especially for programs that rely on Nvidia's CUDA programming interface. Think about any accessories you need, as well -- the drivers and utilities you need to use them may not be available or be stripped down on one or the other.

MacBooks may run faster than equivalently configured Windows laptops simply because MacOS is a lot more tightly integrated with the hardware than Windows can ever be on its side of the fence. Microsoft simply has to support a much wider variety of hardware than Apple will ever need to, and that adds performance overhead; this can be especially important for activities sensitive to latency, like audio recording. Windows' flexibility is both its strength and its weakness.

How we test computers

The review process for laptops, desktops, tablets and other computer-like devices consists of two parts: performance testing under controlled conditions in the CNET Labs and extensive hands-on use by our expert reviewers. This includes evaluating a device's aesthetics, ergonomics and features. A final review verdict is a combination of both those objective and subjective judgments.

The list of benchmarking software we use changes over time as the devices we test evolve. The most important core tests we're currently running on every compatible computer include: Primate Labs Geekbench 5, Cinebench R23, PCMark 10 and 3DMark Fire Strike Ultra.

A more detailed description of each benchmark and how we use it can be found in our How We Test Computers page.

TikTok Testing 'Dislike' Button for Comments

TikTok is testing a "dislike" button that will let users flag comments they believe to be "irrelevant or inappropriate." The feature was designed to help members "stay in control of their interactions," the company said in a blog post on Wednesday.

The button will be a private feature: Only the person who registered a dislike will see it. A Twitter screenshot shared by Engadget showed a "thumbs down" icon next to messages, with no counter indicating how many times a comment had been disliked.

TikTok added that it would determine whether to roll the feature out widely "in the coming weeks."

"This community feedback will add to the range of factors we already use to help keep the comment section consistently relevant and a place for genuine engagement," according to the blog post.

The social media company is also experimenting with reminders that direct creators with a high percentage of negative comments to comment-filtering and bulk block-and-delete features.

TikTok said last year it improved filtering of content that violates its community standards -- including removing more clips that promoted bullying, violent extremism and dangerous acts before they're viewed by anyone.

"We will continue to remove comments that violate our community guidelines, and creators can continue to report comments or accounts individually or in bulk for us to review," the post says.

TikTok creators can already decide who to let comment on their clips -- everyone, no one or only friends whom they follow back. They can also filter comments for manual review or block comments that include selected keywords.

According to Bytedance, the Chinese company that owns TikTok, the platform has 1 billion monthly active users.

Have You Tried Coke Dreamworld Yet? This Is What It Tastes Like

Have You Tried Coke Dreamworld Yet? This Is What It Tastes Like

Dreams may not be the first thing on your mind when you indulge in a refreshing soda, but Coca-Cola has created a new Coke called Dreamworld anyway. It's hoping fans will want to experience the taste of dreams -- similar to how the soft drink company's Coke Byte tried to replicate the taste of "pixels" and Coke Starlight sought to remind drinkers of "space." Ready to give it a try? Coke Dreamworld's ineffable flavor can now be bought in stores.

Coke launched Coca-Cola Creations in February as a platform for a series of limited-edition flavors featuring "unique innovations and unexpected collaborations." Coca-Cola said that Coke Dreamworld "bottles up the technicolor tastes and surrealism of the subconscious." Dreamworld will be the fourth and last Coca-Cola Creations flavor released in 2022.

As with the other Coca-Cola Creations flavors, I decided to try this new version of Coke to see what dreams taste like. Learn all about Coke Dreamworld, including how it tastes and when you can try it yourself. For more, see what Coca-Cola's Marshmello Coke tastes like.

What does Coca-Cola Dreamworld taste like?

Coca-Cola said its new Dreamworld Coke tastes like dreams, so I put it to the test. I received a small aqua-colored can, which immediately made me think of cotton candy. Don't worry, that's not what this Coke tastes like.

It arrived warm, so I poured it over ice -- the soda is the same color as a regular Coke. It had a fruity candy smell -- like Skittles mixed with Coca-Cola -- but it definitely didn't taste the same way. I immediately got a citrus flavor from this soda, but I thought the overall flavor was similar to Marshmello's limited-edition Coke.

As with the previous Coca-Cola releases, I could taste the aspartame because I received the Zero Sugar version of Dreamworld. I'm curious to know how the regular version tastes and if the fruity, citrusy flavor is more noticeable.

So far, Coke Byte is still my favorite from the Coca-Cola Creations line.

When and where you can buy new Coke Dreamworld

As of Monday, Aug. 15, you should be able to find Coca-Cola Dreamworld in the US. There will be both regular and zero-sugar options available and will be sold by the bottle -- like Coca-Cola Starlight -- as well as in cans.

You should be able to find Coke Dreamworld in grocery stores and gas stations near you. With Starlight, I was able to find an end cap that hosted multiple bottles of the Coke flavor.

If you don't immediately see it, find out when the store gets new inventory or ask an employee when the new Coke will arrive.

Coca-Cola didn't say how long this new flavor would be available.

Take it further with the Coca-Cola Dreamworld AR Music Experience

In collaboration with electronic dance music festival brand Tomorrowland, you can experience augmented reality music. To try it out, scan the QR code on your can or bottle to be taken to the digital hub.

Once you're there, you'll be transported into a full 3D virtual AR music experience where you'll see an avatar DJ spinning tracks. The QR code also unlocks games and other Easter eggs.

Coca-Cola also partnered with DressX, a digital fashion store, to create Dreamworld-inspired outfits for fans to download and wear in the metaverse.

Acer Chromebook Spin 714 Looks Like the Premium Chromebook to Beat

Acer had one of the best Chromebooks available in 2021 with the Spin 713, and now it looks like it might repeat its success with the Chromebook Spin 714. The premium two-in-one doesn't stray far from its predecessor in terms of what it offers, but Acer did make some changes to keep it competitive and likely a top pick for Chromebook power users.

For the 714, Acer moved from a 13.5-inch, 2,256x1,504-pixel touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio to a 16:10 14-inch, 2,560x1,600-pixel display with 100% sRGB color gamut coverage. The switch still gives you extra vertical space to work compared to a 16:9 widescreen but it's not as tall, which feels more balanced and slips more easily into a backpack.

Acer Chromebook Spin 714 (2022)

The Spin 714 is thick for a tablet.

Josh Goldman/CNET

The display is covered in antimicrobial Gorilla Glass for added durability and the reinforced aluminum body is Mil-Spec tested (MIL-STD-810H) for protection from minor drops, vibration, rain, dust, high and low temperatures and humidity. That's just the start of the premium features, though.

The first configuration that's expected to be available in the US in August will sell for $750 with an Intel Core i5-1235U, 8GB LPDDR4X RAM and a 256GB PCIe NVMe Gen 3 SSD. (That price converts to roughly £600 or AU$1,065.)  That's enough to run Steam for gaming, but it's expected to be available with even more power featuring up to an Intel Core i7-1260P, up to 16GB of RAM and up to a 512GB PCIe NVMe Gen 4 SSD.

Acer Chromebook Spin 714 (2022)

The design isn't as exciting as the rest of the package.

Josh Goldman/CNET

The Acer Chromebook Spin 714 is Intel Evo verified, which means it meets certain standards for performance, battery life (up to 10 hours in this case), responsiveness, and wireless and wired connections, among other things. Rounding out the top-flight features are Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, dual Thunderbolt 4 ports, a backlit keyboard, a full-HD webcam with a privacy shutter and a slim USI stylus that stores and charges in a garage under the front edge on the left side of the Chromebook. There will be an optional fingerprint reader also.

Although there was a steep drop in Chromebook shipments during the first quarter of 2022, business PC shipments rose. The Chromebook Spin 714's combination of durability, potential performance and premium features is certainly a good fit for hybrid workers. But I guess we'll have to wait for August to find out for sure.

Vivo's in-screen fingerprint scanning phone sells Jan. 24

The world's first phone with an in-screen fingerprint scanner finally has a name, and a birth date. The Vivo X20 Plus UD goes on sale Jan. 24, starting in China.

We first saw the one-of-a-kind tech at CES, the world's largest technology show. Chinese phone maker Vivo showed us a preproduction device that scans your fingerprint when you place your finger on the screen. There's no home button, just a target on the lock screen that you tap when you want to unlock the device -- and then it's out of your way. Vivo calls it Clear ID.

Although Vivo's phone will be the first to market with this innovation, we expect it to kick off a trend in 2018 and beyond. Currently, almost every phone on the planet has a physical fingerprint scanner that you press to get into your phone: either south of the screen, integrated in the power button, or on the phone's back.

Apple's iPhone X is one notable exception -- it uses Face ID to unlock the phone, and has no fingerprint scanner whatsoever.

Both the iPhone X and Samsung Galaxy S8 were rumored to get the embedded sensor, and didn't. With the Galaxy S9 launching in February in Barcelona, Spain, Samsung and other device makers will have a chance to show off their use of the technology, which was created by components company Synaptics.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD is a variation on the previously announced X20 Plus, so expect it to have the same 6.43-inch AMOLED display with thin bezels, a Snapdragon octa-core processor, dual rear cameras and 4GB of RAM -- the in-screen fingerprint sensor is really the standout feature.

Vivo will announce the X20 Plus UD Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. local time in China; it's unclear if it will come to other markets outside of Vivo's home country.

iPhone sales see a boost after four quarters of decline, Gartner says

Apple's iPhone once again saw growth after four consecutive quarters of decline, according to a Tuesday report by Gartner. The phone grew 7.8% in the fourth quarter of 2019, the report says.

"A slight lowering of the prices of the iPhone 11 series, compared with the iPhone XR, and other price reductions for previous-generation iPhone models, increased demand," Annette Zimmermann, research vice president at Gartner, said in a release.

In China, iPhone sales were particularly strong, growing by 39% in Q4. Apple also saw strong performance in areas such as the UK, France, Germany, Brazil and India. Gartner analysts anticipate Apple will roll out its first 5G phone in the third quarter of this year.

Overall, though, global sales of smartphones dropped 0.4% year over year in the fourth quarter of 2019, Gartner says. Sales declined by 1% in the full year.

"2019 ended a little better than expected, due to slightly improved performances from North America and emerging Asia/Pacific," Anshul Gupta, senior research analyst at Gartner, said in the statement. "However, India, which sold 151.9 million units, overtook the US to become the No. 2 country for smartphone sales in 2019. China maintained the lead, with sales of 390.8 million smartphones over the full year."

The top vendors include Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Xiaomi and Oppo. Apple and Xiaomi were the only companies in the top five that saw growth in Q4 of 2019. Although Samsung saw a drop in sales, it maintained the No. 1 spot with 17.3% market share. Apple landed the No. 2 spot with 17.1% market share.

Xiaomi's smartphone sales increased 16.5% year over year, reaching 32.4 million units in Q4. "The price and performance of Redmi models drove Xiaomi's smartphone sales growth, and the company did particularly well in emerging Asia/Pacific," Gupta said.

The outbreak of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and the disease it causes, COVID-19, could bring challenges for retail-focused vendors like Oppo and Vivo, Gartner says, but could present opportunities for Xiaomi, which has been amping up its online presence.

"Looking forward, while the COVID-19 outbreak will impact smartphone demand negatively in China in the first quarter of 2020, we do not expect a demand contraction in the international smartphone market during that period," Zimmermann said.

Last week, market researcher IDC estimated coronavirus would negatively impact the global smartphone market in 2020.

Samsung, despite a 0.5% year-over-year decline in phone sales in the fourth quarter, kept its No. 1 spot in last year's global ranking. Its full-year sales rose by 0.4% to 296.2 million units.

Huawei saw the highest growth last year, with an overall increase of 18.6%, despite a ban from the US. The company boosted its market share in China by 37% in 2019, according to Gartner. For the overall year, it landed ahead of Apple in the No. 2 spot, with 15.6% market share.

"If Huawei continues to face a ban on accessing technology from the US in 2020, its smartphone prospects in the international smartphone market will be severely impacted," Gupta said.
