Infotainment integration reduces the obligation to use smartphone mirroring like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in order to access popular streaming services.
Smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto has extended to nearly every new car in the US. But automakers aren't content to stop there: Some OEMs offer music-service integration directly through their infotainment system, and Audi is the latest to join the fray.
Audi on Thursday announced that it will offer Apple Music integration directly through the latest version of its MMI infotainment system. This incorporation will be offered free of charge for "nearly all" 2022 model year Audi vehicles, according to the automaker. Cars already with owners should receive the same software by way of an over-the-air update. This applies to Audis in Europe, North America and Japan.
Instead of relying on a tethered smartphone connection to access a user's Apple Music library, Audi's setup allows the owner to bypass that and access it directly through MMI. This means data will be delivered through the car's built-in modem and is thus subject to whatever data package an owner has purchased for their vehicle. If you don't have a data subscription for your car, CarPlay and Android Auto will continue to work just fine for accessing Apple Music.
Getting everything set up isn't difficult. Once the app is installed, users can enter their Apple ID and finish the process via two-factor authentication. After that, it's just a matter of hopping in the car every morning and tapping the screen a couple times.

This year's virtual Computex show -- the normally mammoth trade show in Taiwan that's gone virtual for 2021 due to the pandemic -- kicked off with AMD CEO Lisa Su's keynote address, and for once, a keynote made some real news. AMD's long-anticipated mobile GPUs based on its RDNA 2 technology, the Radeon RX 6800M, 6700M and 6600M, debuted during her remarks.
They join AMD's new Advantage Design Framework, a partnership program in the style of Intel Evo and Nvidia Studio for setting standards for premium gaming laptop experiences, as well as the launch of AMD's cross-platform FidelityFX Super Resolution technology for video games.
We've been eagerly awaiting the new GPUs because they bring some of AMD's best new technologies to laptops, notably RDNA 2. That includes Ray Accelerator cores, Infinity Cache on the GPU die, support for Smart Access Memory, which allows AMD's CPU to directly access the GPU memory, and more. The result is lower latency, better performance per watt -- that means better battery life -- and AMD's first step toward hardware-accelerated ray tracing. (AMD's GPUs still effectively lag Nvidia's on DirectX ray tracing, however.)

The new GPUs each have a partner system as the poster child for launch. The RX 6800M arrives this month in the Asus ROG Strix G15 Advantage Edition, which also serves as one of the first systems built within the AMD Advantage Design Framework. HP is slated to debut an Omen 16 equipped with the RX 6600M soon after. Both the RX 6800 and RX 6700 target 1440p gaming, while the RX 6600M goes after 1080p.
A key component in AMD's strategy is the Advantage Design Framework, "the result of a multi-year collaboration between AMD and its global PC partners to deliver the next generation of premium, high performance gaming laptops," the company says. Specifications for Advantage laptops include an AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPU, Radeon RX 6000M series GPU, battery life greater than 10 hours, over 100 frames per second in "today's most visually demanding titles," a display with at least 300 nits brightness and refresh rate at least 144Hz, and cool operation under heavy loads, "all packed into sleek laptop designs." As a poster child, the ROG Strix G15 AE delivers.

AMD also rolled out the Pro (aka business-focused) versions of its Ryzen boxed processors for compact desktops. They're essentially the same as the non-Pro models, which rely on integrated graphics rather than discrete, but with the extra security and manageability features that define the business chips. You'll know them by the last two digits in their names, which are "50" rather than "00."
Another long-awaited release from AMD, we're finally getting the first games with support for its FidelityFX Super Resolution technology this month. FFSR is similar to Nvidia's DLSS AI-driven upscaling technology -- a way to render using smaller textures so you can get higher frame rates with little loss of detail -- but AMD's solution doesn't require proprietary hardware and is open source software. In theory, it should work on Nvidia GTX GPUs as well as Radeon. DLSS not only requires Nvidia hardware, it also requires an RTX-generation GPU. The AMD solution does require that developers build support in their games, though. The first FFSR titles will be announced on June 22.

A cat-and-mouse game between captor and captive ensues. While it's slower-paced at times in its confined setting, Berlin Syndrome assuredly delivers a gripping thriller.

If you're looking for further proof the Duplass brothers are actually evil, here's an easy sell. Patrick Brice (also the director and co-writer) plays a videographer answering a Craigslist ad for Josef (Mark Duplass), who wants to make a movie for his supposed unborn child. I typically enjoy horror films that rely on performances to unnerve you, because they're incredibly difficult to pull off. And I've got to give it to Mark Duplass. He is, in fact, super creepy.

Gerald's Game (2017)
Before the impeccable The Haunting of Hill House series, Mike Flanagan brought us this deft adaptation of Stephen King novel Gerald's Game. Carla Gugino is immense as Jessie, a woman who goes on holiday with her husband at an isolated lake house in Alabama. When Jessie ends up handcuffed to the bed with no one to help her escape, it becomes a matter of both survival and escape. Another chapter of Flanagan's melancholy-suffused horror that surges into quiet triumph for its haunted characters.

The Call (2020)
Two movies named The Call came out in 2020. Watch the South Korean one, a time travel thriller revolving around, yep, a phone call. Twenty-eight-year-old Seo-yeon finds a phone buried in a closet in her childhood home. It rings -- and the caller, it turns out, is living in the same house 20 years earlier. Twists right up to the final moment, plus a wild cat-and-mouse chase that alters the past and present make this a must-watch.

Under The Shadow (2016)
Like a few other titles in this list, this superb psychological horror subtly doubles as an allegory for wider social themes, such as oppression. Set in 1980s Tehran, during a series of air raids known as the War of the Cities, it follows a mother and daughter haunted in their home by a mysterious evil. With echoes of The Babadook as well as its own fresh ideas, Under The Shadow is an excellent horror entry.

The Huawei P30 Pro's amazing Leica quad-camera system makes it one of the best and most unique phones released this year. If you pride yourself as a phone camera enthusiast the P30 Pro is worth your consideration. But with the recent news that the White House banned US companies from doing business with Huawei, you might feel a little nervous dropping $900 on a phone even with Google promising to support Google Play and security updates. I know I would.
Even before the ban, buying a P30 Pro in the US was a challenge because it's officially not sold here. You had to get an international GSM version that lacked a US warranty and would only work with some GSM carriers like T-Mobile and AT&T. Currently the price on an international P30 Pro is on the rise. At the time this story published, a 256GB Huawei P30 Pro costs $969 on Amazon.

The P30 Pro has a Night mode for photos which the iPhone lacks. But the iPhone has a low-light recording setting that automatically reduces the frame rate in darker conditions to gather more light. The results are phenomenal.

Oppo Reno has an insane 60x zoom
Currently, the only phone that can compete with the P30 Pro's 3x optical zoom, 5x hybrid zoom and 50x digital zoom is the brand new Oppo Reno, which has a 10x hybrid zoom and a 60x digital zoom. Like the P30 Pro, it's not sold in the US, but you can find an international version for sale through a third-party retailer on sites like Amazon for $800.
The Oppo Reno has an even more monster zoom than the Huawei P30 Pro and it has this crazy shark fin pop-up selfie camera.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus for ultra-wide angle delight
Like the P30 Pro, the new Galaxy S10 Plus has an ultra-wide angle camera on it. What wows me about it on the Galaxy S10 Plus is how well Samsung matched the main and ultra-wide cameras.

Want to video or voice chat with more people over WhatsApp? Now you can.
In a new update released Monday, the popular messaging app is bumping up the number of people who can be on a video or voice call at once to eight, double its previous limit of four, the company said in an update note on the iPhone App Store.
As it was before, the calls are end-to-end encrypted with Facebook writing in a blog post that "no one else can view or listen to your private conversation, not even WhatsApp."
The Android version of the app does not yet appear to be updated in the Google Play store but, as MSPowerUser notes, an updated version with support for eight callers can be downloaded directly from WhatsApp's website.
The new update is rolling out worldwide starting today, and WhatsApp says that it should arrive on the Play store this week.
To have a call with more people, everyone on the call needs to be on the latest version of the app on either platform.

Anti-Transgender Bills: What They Would Ban and Where They're Being Considered
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear vetoed a bill on Wednesday that would ban transgender girls in middle and high school from playing on sports teams that align with their gender identity. The Republican-dominated state legislature is expected to override his veto when it reconvenes next week.
In his veto message, Beshear, a Democrat, said the Fairness in Women's Sports Act failed to address any issues not already covered by current school athletics guidelines.
"Transgender children deserve public officials' efforts to demonstrate that they are valued members of our communities through compassion, kindness and empathy, even if not understanding," Beshear said.
Kentucky is one of an estimated 32 states considering more than 130 anti-trans bills, according to the Human Rights Campaign, the country's largest LGBTQ advocacy group.
Here's what you need to know about the bills under consideration around the country, including what the measures entail and which states are considering them.
'Don't say gay' laws
On Mar. 28, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill prohibiting discussion of gender identity or sexual orientation in kindergarten through third grade "or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students." The so-called "Don't Say Gay" act sparked fierce opposition, including a walkout by Disney employees who were angry that Bob Chapek, the company's chief executive officer, didn't initially take a public stance against the legislation.
At a signing ceremony, DeSantis, a Republican, said the Parental Rights in Education Act "will make sure that parents can send their kids to school to get an education, not an indoctrination."
About 60 Walt Disney Co. employees walked off the job in Glendale, California, to protest their company's reluctance to publicly fight Florida's "Don't Say Gay" law. Disney has now said it will work to get the law repealed.

Critics of the measure say its vagueness leaves educators vulnerable, given that it allows parents to sue school districts if they believe the act has been violated. A lawsuit challenging the law alleges it violates students' rights to free speech, equal protection and due process.
At least 15 other states are considering similar "Don't Say Gay" measures. Many are presented as parents' bills of rights or academic transparency measures.
Bills before Oklahoma legislators include one that would prohibit librarians and teachers from discussing gender identity and another that would allow families to sue teachers for $10,000 if they promote positions "in opposition to the closely held religious beliefs of students."
A bill in the Tennessee House would ban textbooks that "promote, normalize, support, or address" LGBT issues or "lifestyles," while legislators in Indiana have penned a bill requiring parents to give permission for any classroom discussion involving gender identity, sexual orientation, "transgenderism" or any aspect of human sexuality.
Transgender athlete bans
Roughly half of the anti-transgender legislation at the state level would prohibit trans youth from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity, according to the Human Rights Campaign.
On Mar. 30, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt signed the "Save Women's Sports Act," which prohibits transgender girls from playing on female sports teams at the high school or college level.
At least 15 states are considering some form of ban on trans students in school sports.

"When it comes to sports and athletics, girls should compete against girls [and] boys should compete against boys," Stitt said at the signing. "And let's be very clear: That's all this bill says."
Lawmakers in at least 15 states are considering some form of a transgender-athlete ban, according to the legislative tracker from Freedom for All Americans, which advocates for LGBTQ equality.
In addition to Oklahoma, they include Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Utah and Wisconsin.
Frequently, the language is aimed specifically at transgender girls in sports, not trans boys: Last week, for example, the Kansas Senate passed a bill that requires "female student athletic teams only include members who are biologically female."
That measure now awaits a hearing in the House. Gov. Laura Kelly, a Democrat, vetoed similar legislation last year but Republicans may have enough votes this time to override a veto.
It's not just Democrats balking at these bills, though: GOP Gov. Eric Holcomb of Indiana vetoed a trans-athlete ban on March 23, saying the legislature hadn't demonstrated there was a problem that required government intervention.
But three days later Utah lawmakers overrode Republican Gov. Spencer Cox's veto of the Student Eligibility in Scholastic Activities Act, which prohibits "a student of the male sex from competing against another school on a team designated for female students."
Idaho became the first state to pass a transgender athlete ban back in March 2020, followed by Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia, according to the Movement Advancement Project.
Most recently, a ban in Arizona, the Save Women's Sports Act was signed into law by Republican Gov. Doug Ducey on Wednesday.
Prohibition on transition-related care for minors
In April 2021, Arkansas became the first (and, to date, only) state to ban transition-related care for minors when the GOP-dominated legislature overrode Republican Gov. Asa Hutchinson's veto of HB 1570, the Save Adolescents From Experimentation (SAFE) Act.
After the Texas Legislature failed to pass a transition-care ban in 2021, Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive action in February ordering the state's child welfare agency to treat gender-affirming medical care as felony child abuse. Members of the general public are empowered to report parents if it appears that their children are receiving such treatment.

Kate Oakley, Human Rights Campaign's state legislative director and senior counsel, called the action "outrageously lawless."
"It's against science and appalling abuse of executive power," Oakley told CNET. Both Abbott's order and the Arkansas law are being challenged in court.
At least 14 other states are looking to restrict gender-affirming care for minors, some with criminal penalties for medical providers and parents.
Alabama's Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act, which has cleared the state Senate and is now before the House, would make it a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a $15,000 fine for a doctor to prescribe puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones to someone under 18.
"Adults are free to do what they want to do, but this is to protect children. I consider it abuse to give these long-term drugs to these children," the bill's sponsor, Rep. Wesley Allen, told the House Judiciary Committee earlier this month, The Hill reported.
Similar legislation is being considered in Arizona, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, North Carolina, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee, according to the Williams Institute at the UCLA School of Law.
Age-appropriate care for transgender minors is considered medically appropriate by a majority of health care organizations, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Pediatric Endocrine Society and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Other anti-transgender legislation
While sports bans and prohibition on medical care have been the most common and successful bills, there are also measures aiming at restricting access to restrooms and prohibiting changes to gender markers on birth certificates.
Arizona's HB 2161 would make it illegal for teachers or administrators to withhold information from a parent who is deemed relevant to their child's wellbeing.

It specifically cites details about a student's "purported gender identity or requested transition" if that identity "is incongruous with the student's biological sex." School districts can be sued for noncompliance, and teachers can lose their certification.
The bill's sponsor, Rep. Steve Kaiser, says it's not the school's job to be a safe space for students.
"Their job is to teach my son reading, writing and math," Kaiser said, according to KJZZ. "Their job is not to console my son. That's to let me know so I can coach my son and console my son."
Human Rights Campaign's Oakley says bills like Kaiser's work to "taking out the support for trans youth one by one."
"Whether it's parents and doctors, teammates, teachers or guidance counselors," she added. "The goal is to contract and contract the support the kids have until they're all alone."

Asheville, North Carolina, a city of about 90,000 in the Blue Ridge Mountains, is a cultural hub, packed with dozens of art galleries and a thriving local music scene with venues that attract acts from around the world. So if there's a pairing of a company and a community that works better than Moog Music and Asheville, I don't know what it could be.
Asheville has been called one of America's greatest music cities, and Moog wouldn't dream of moving anywhere else. "We've really taken on a character of the town," says Mike Adams, president of Moog Music, a 20-year veteran of the storied synthesizer company. "There's a great music scene here, and there's a lot of very artistic people. I would say 70% of the people that work here are musicians -- it's a really natural fit."
Moog's high-end boutique synthesizers run from around $1,200 to $9,000 or more. Founded in New York in 1953 by Robert Moog (pronounced "moag"), its instruments ushered in the era of electronic music, and have been used by everyone from Trent Reznor to Donna Summer, from The Beatles to the Beastie Boys. Today the factory where its 170 employees work looks more like a mad scientist's music lab than an assembly line. And there's a good reason: Each synthesizer takes dozens of hours each to build, all right in Asheville.
"Nothing we make has an off-the-shelf component to it," Adams says. "And that's part of the beauty."
Founder Bob Moog moved to Asheville in 1978, and the company has been making synths here since 1994. Its ability to attract the unique mix of musical know-how and the technical skills required to assemble the synths is another reason Moog is staying put. Adams mentions at least two current employees who drove to Asheville, prepared to live out of their vans until they could somehow get hired at the company.
"We obviously have to attract and recruit specific engineering talent," he says. "But there's a lot of people [here] that have just always loved what Moog is about and what it stands for."

Despite a premium product line and fiercely loyal customers, Moog faces a lot of the same manufacturing challenges as other businesses around the world. "Supply, supply, supply."
"We just can't get enough parts to keep up with the production," Adams says. "We've been hurt by the extraordinary expense that it's taken to bring in material that's cost us an arm and a leg."
The supply chain problems stem from the COVID-19 pandemic, which hasn't left the rarified world of hand-assembled synthesizers untouched. While Moog instruments are built in the USA, critical internal components come from China, which leaves this company in the same difficult situation as so many others. Factory shutdowns and slowdowns around the world have left some components in short supply, driving up prices, while international cargo shipping is struggling to catch up on missed 2020 deliveries. It's a version of the same problem plaguing phone manufacturers and carmakers. It's the same reason you still can't buy a PlayStation 5. Even the price of the wood used on the outer shells of retro-looking Moogs has skyrocketed.

"Our business is really handcuffed by our suppliers and the ability to get anything from plastic to metal to electronic components to printed circuit boards," says Adams."The reasons for that range from anything from raw materials shortages to climate change to COVID to just a huge spike in demand for certain products."
But there's something of a pandemic silver lining for a company like Moog, too. Spending more time at home, those with the means to do so took the opportunity to invest in hobbies and creative pursuits that mattered to them. And by not spending money on travel or entertainment, some spent more than they normally would on things like premium music gear.

"People did the cocooning, and they wanted better gear because they're spending so much more time with it," says Joe Richardson, Moog's chief marketing officer. "Our instruments lend themselves very well to folks creating music on their own. There was so little performing going on, so synthesizers make for a great way to discover and go exploring to satisfy that creative need."
Despite the supply chain and pandemic challenges, the company says it has sold twice as many of its flagship (read: $9,000) Moog One synths as expected so far in 2021.
"It's a really strong statement that people are willing to invest in quality," Richardson says, adding, "Nobody buys a Moog because it's inexpensive."
The handcrafted look of a Moog, and the unique factory where the instruments are built and tested, are all part of the brand's mystique. CNET photographer Sarah Tew took a tour of Moog's Asheville headquarters. Follow along with her to see everything from vintage synths to testing stations to a display case of rare prototypes. And when you're in Asheville, you can take a mini tour (more extensive tours are suspended due to the pandemic) and browse the company store and a showroom. A separate "Moogseum" nearby is run by the Bob Moog Foundation, named after the company founder, who died in 2005.
